Introduction

My name is Jerome DeLuntier. I am a practitioner of arcane magic. I attained this power by studying a particular subset of wizardry; specifically the magical bardic arts. I am also a Chronicler in service to the Order of Chronomancy.

What you hold in your hands is my life’s most important work: the Chronicle of the Immortal Lords—or rather those few Immortal Lords who changed the world. You should also know that there are two versions of this Chronicle and the one you currently read is the unauthorized, illegal version. You see, we Chroniclers—contrary to what you may have been led to believe—don’t always tell the truth; our texts are scrutinized and censored by the Order of Chronomancy in order to present a more “convenient” truth.

Not so with this document. No, dear reader, this document is the most honest-to-gods Chronicle you’ll ever get your hands on. So, keep this hidden and show it only to those you trust with your life for rest assured, your life is now at stake simply for eyeing these seemingly innocent words.

To compile this document I was granted access to the personal journals of the people most directly involved in the affairs described therein as well as the journals of some of their enemies. Hundreds of eye witnesses were interviewed and judicious use of oracular magic was employed. I even resorted to alchemical concoctions that grand one’s mind a more clear view of events past.

I am nearing the end of my life, and I am happy I was able to complete this before my soul was claimed by the vicissitudes of the astral sea. And it is because of my advanced age that I decided to publish the True Chronicle and let not the Chronomancers once again distort history to suit their whims. This is a history of heroes and villains; of that there is no denial. But whereas the Chronomancers might wish to paint the heroes in the brightest light and bathe the villains in the darkest shades, in truth things are never that simple.

As a Chronicler I am supposed to present the facts in the coldest, straightest method possible. As a bard, I am inclined to use elaborate prose and weave an intricate saga of epic proportions. I have strived to avoid both extremes in this book. The facts are all here, but they’re neither embellished nor needlessly expanded… most of the time, I’m still a bard after all.

So, let us begin, dear reader…
